NB: this will never be fixed, as gnome doesn't think users should have
files on the desktop. Witness the sort desktop icons bugs filed in 2003
which sat unresolved for 15 years before being quietly expired upstream.

Note previous comment #12 no longer works in 17.04, as Bryan's deb
depends on superseded packages such as libpng12 and libtiff4.
Building from source is a little tedious, but not hard:

Ubuntu's netpbm is now old enough to drive, so this is unlikely to be
fixed.

Same problem on 15.04. I am running Infinality though, which is too
useful to remove, but also does custom things to freetype.
Still bitten by the jp2 bug. What's this been - for 6 years now?

A fresh reinstall of 14.10 brought this problem back for me; an
effective hard lockout because the system interprets my Magic Mouse

Still present in Ubuntu 14.10. Evince is substituting vastly incorrect
fonts. DejaVu-Serif for Times-Roman is forgivable through ignorance, but
Liberation Sans for ZapfDingbats is in “what is this I don't even”
country.

It's still a problem in ghostscript_9.10 — not that pdfopt was much use
anyway. It's always better to create PDFs at the size you need them then
try to squish them afterwards. Also, the often recommended pdf2ps/ps2pdf
route will likely break a lot of PDF files out there.
