I've put together a walk-through in case anyone is struggling with this.
I have enabled root logins on my computer but realise that this isn't
there by default. I have therefore put together something that should
work on a standard setup without leaving a mess behind :-)

I confirm : Reinstalling xserver-xorg-core, xserver-common (version
1.17.1-0ubuntu3) fixes this problem.
I hadn't xephyr installed.
