I've switched my production machine to Mint 14.1 (a deriviative of Ubuntu 12.10) with their Cinnamon desktop environment, and the problem has gone away. I'll try to reproduce on Quantal on my test machine, and report back. It may be that the problem has been fixed somewhere between Oneric and
