It's for selecting the Next or Previously unread message which is what
it sounds like you wanted to do, right?
Previous being in the "up" direction and Next being in the "down"
direction.

Hello,
I compiled evolution HEAD today and I can't use the Contacts folder
anymore. When I select it, Evo complains that it can't find the file.
But the file is there and Evo 1.0.2 handles it correctly.
Is there a way of getting that working ?

I use digest versions of mailing lists in an effort to cut down the
number of mails I get.
