I concur... Definitely do not skimp on the scanner. While a
high end scanner cannot guarantee the best output, it should
give you the best image to start with. Just make sure that
every piece of equipment in your workflow is correctly

My opinion is that it is none of these ... it is the monitor which has the
smallest gamut (... but it could also be the printer,
The most important is the scanner so that your input is of the best quality possible.
You can always visually compensate for a poor monitor. You can always work on the
image with whatever software you prefer. And if your printer is not good enough you
can send it out for printing.
