It also seems to work on my MacBook Pro when I run FreeBSD 8.4 (but because of
lack of features like KMS, running 8.4 is not really an option to me).

I also have pretty much the same problem.
The only difference is that I'm on a MacBook Pro from 2011, running in UEFI
mode on FreeBSD 11. The problem also exists in CSM (BIOS) mode on FreeBSD 10
