after days of playing with settings and configurations I found that
the problem was the network _cable_. I replaced the cable and it went

After the cd boots, it loads the BTX loader, does a
partial boot sequence then
listing pf/spamd
in front of your mail server kills an awful lot of spam. keep
spamassassin in there by all means, but after you start greylisting
you most likely will see the load on the machine drop considerably.
it's fairly easy to implement too.
