I have fvwm 2.6.7 (I believe) running in RHEL 6.8 and have not had a problem.

Yes, fvwm should work just fine on Centos 6. You may want to compile
the 2.6.8 release instead of using the package available in CentOS fo

Couple of observation I have noticed that is a bit worrying:
- There hasn't been any commit against this project for almost 2 years
- Is the mailing list public? Google searches are only bringing up v
