My wired network connection on laptop already is a system connection and on my
home PC I don't even use Network manager - I use dhcpcd at boot time. However,
KDE thinks that I'm offline.

I even think the problem might be in "Hardware Integration Configuration with
Solid" (System settings -> Information sources). The network management backend
does not correct
