I'm still able to duplicate this bug using:
linux-image-3.13.0-78-generic (from trusty-backports)
linux-image-3.19.0-50-generic (from linux-image-generic-lts-vivid)
The LXC images failed to start under linux-image-4.2.0-28-generic, with
a kernel oops.
I also tried, in Xenial, linux-image-4.4.0-2
This seems to be a bug in gcc itself. It should automatically disable
PIE when -mcmodel=kernel or when __KERNEL__ is passed in a header.
Attempts to compile using no PIE command line flags don't work either.
It's as if it's not allowing it to be turned back off.

You should get notifications in this bug when that's about to happen.
I'd say everything from 2 weeks to 2 months depending on SRU cycle
timing.
Meanwhile using the DKMS packages (
https://www.ubuntu.com/Audio/UpgradingAlsa/DKMS ) should fix your issue.

ich I compiled corresponding to the first
good commit. (The 4.3 one is also giving me a few bugs which I think are
unrelated). So I think I can wait for the backport.
Thanks again for your help.

Okay, I tested the daily build of xenial (ubuntu version) this morning.
It is using kernel 4.3.0-2, and I can confirm that this detects the
monitor without problem.

ive D100 bluetooth speaker also works, with the A2DP sink mode
active and stereo output.
From looking at the code there are quite a few changes to the mwifiex
driver between 4.2.0 and 4.3.0, it does not seem meaningful to port
them back just to make 15.10 work with the default kernel.
I see this bug is tagged xenial. Please post a fix which can be added to
Wily, to escape the long shudown delay.
Thanks.

This is a very ugly bug.
Sometimes this causes reboots to hang for long periods. Just timed it on
a Wily system with all upgrades installed.
Takes 157 seconds, to shutdown system.
Above comments only mention 3.19 (Vivid) kernels. This problem persists
in Wily...

I've run into a similar issue running balance on a 3 disk btrfs
filesystem with data and metadata set to raid 1. I can't confirm that
I'm seeing this same exact error as I don't have any of the log output
as my entire system is running on this btrfs volume. Only was able to

I was having a problem rather similar to this (although on different
hardware). I found that installing a 4.3.xx version kernel from the
mainline builds described above fixed the problem.
(Miraculously, I don't think it broke anything else either!)

Public bug reported:
On xubuntu 15.10.
Kernel version 4.2.0-18-generic x86_64 does not detect an external
monitor when it is connected via the minidisplay port. Using xrandr, I
can force output to the monitor, but the maximum resolution is 1024x768
(I think). Hardware is a Dell XPS 13.
