While not officially supporting Dell Studio laptops in the past,
previous versions of Ubuntu (>= 11.10) and previous kernels had support
for i8k on my device.
Manually inserting gives the message "No such device". Forcing it causes
a kernel panic.

@Joseph:
Sorry for the late response. I've been busy.
I downloaded and installed that kernel that you linked.
It unfortunately did not resolve my problem.
I recieved the same error messages as before (no /proc/i8k).
Was Dell Laptop support enabled when you compiled?

Christopher,
I performed these steps, in the order that they were listed:
1. Uninstall i8kutils

i8kutils "works" with the upstream kernel. i8kfan runs the fan for about
4 seconds, then immediately drops it back down to 0. However, this is a
good improvement over the intermittent segfaulting previously.

Tested with archived kernel versions:
- 3.0.0-12-generic
- 3.2.0-60-generic
- 3.13.0-24-generic
- 3.13.0-27-generic
- 3.13.0-29-generic (default)
Could not regain control of i8k on any of these kernels running Ubuntu
14.04. However, I was able to control the fans with i8kfan in previous
versions
Worked on previous versions of Ubuntu — if you have older kernel
versions installed, test those!
