Plowed thru a screenful of messages when starting unity and saw the line
near the top:
"Your hardware does not support unity"
or words to that effect.
This hardware is Intel Core 2 Duo on a Lenovo Think Centre. Main line
hardware if there ever was.

Found an usb drive with -6 linux image. Booted & ran fine.
-8 from update will rarely start unity. -7 never boots to panels.
BTW, Xorg seems to be running the screen fine. Starting unity gets many
lines of errors but I don't know what log these might be stored in - I
haven't found any of these

Problem was caused by a newer version of Metacity uploaded to the
archives that broke the desktop. Resolved by Compiz
1:0.9.12+14.10.20140812-0ubuntu1 which was built against the new
Metacity.

Installed kernel -6 on the .iso install that only has -7 kernel

Seemed to install, also got the same problem wallpaper only no unity
panels.
In sum:
proper boot from utopic with kernel -5
wallpaper only no panels from utopic -5 upd

3.16.0-5 booted O.K. on the utopic that updated to 3.16.0-7 and got the
wallpaper failure with the -7. The -5 runs O.K.
Both kernels were still in the /boot folder.
The other utopic partition is a new install with wallpaper failure and
there's no prior kernels, only -7.

iso?

With laptop using same Intel graphics as above I get the same effect
(wallpaper only after log in). This system has been regularly updated
since start of 14.10. Also present on new install using 12 Aug .iso
