Yes, this is a known bug in KDE's pager.
I added a link to the upstream bug. There were some fixes to kpager in
the latest KDE version to work better with beryl/compiz but evidently
there are still issues.

Yes, kmilo introduces such a visual feedback, but only for some special
multimedia keys. If I use a normal keyboard or configure the shortcuts
to normal keys I get no longer any visual feedback.

common one from people who need to setup their keyboard's special keys.

I just took a look what SUSE Factory (10.1) does. Their GRUB package includes a
script called 'grubonce', which modifies grub's menu.lst to set a default. And
they patch kdm to use this script.

I just saw that there is another problem then different architectures.
The needed functionality is no longer there in the current Grub packages of
Debian and Ubuntu. Thus the KDM option doesn't work with Dapper's grub anyway.
