My GDM was just updated with some other packages.
Seems I can now logout of Gnome. I can also probably reboot, shutdown,
etc.
I still get the lockups when I try to change to a VT via ctrl-alt-
delete.

Is this exact lockup problem only on Ubuntu?
I've been searching the web haven't seen it elsewhere.

Using GDM here, too.
Tried franceloc's modifiv=cation to the kdmrc, then switched login
managers to kdm.
Still got lockups, regardless if using KDE or Gnome.
Tried no display manager. Machine booted, got to a tty login prompt,
logged in and did a "startx &". Had no "default" desktop set so XFCE
New drivers have not fixed the lockup here.
Installed the new (ATI commercial) driver last night; problem still
existed.
Reinstalled the Ubuntu driver this morning, problem still exists.

Tried both the commercial and Ubuntu fglrx drivers.
Tried franceloc's addition to the xorg.conf.
Still have the lockups as stated above.
"fglrxinfo" in a terminal returns:
