Wordpad creates RTF files using \ul with \ulnone without any problems.
Changing the keywords in the source code to \ulw and \ulwnone shows your
described behavior: whitespaces

Superscript and Subscript has the same problem.
They turn on, but do NOT turn off.
\subSubscripts text and shrinks point size according to font information.
