I can with gs-8.50 (from CVS). I'm trying gs-afpl-8.14 now.

Ok. You're seeing problems that are fixed in CVS. I just tried, and
succceeded in make web with gs 8.01.

I'm attempting to build 2.5.19 on debian unstable. Configure seems to
be reasonably happy now, but is still complaining about gs:
