Haven’t seen this posted here, but a Red Phalarope was found this morning by
Loyan Beausoleil at Stuyvesant Cove, at 20th St on the East River. The bird has
continued and has been very cooperative, often feeding within a few feet of
onlookers.

I, together with several other hapless souls encountered along the way, spent
the first half of the day covering the area around the duck blind with no

checked) at 5:30 pm today. There were only about 10 sandpipers and 1

Just to clarify the phalarope is located at Jones Beach West End (JBWE --
Nassau County) NOT Jamaica Bay wildlife refuge (JBWR Queens County).
These near identical acronyms looked like they might pose a problem for some.

Still feeding at 2nd pond when I arrived at 11:15am, observed with Brooklyn

For a while I was the only one out here till a nice couple from Westchestrt
arrived. Still present but on west most pond towards the ocean. Was
sleeping till a gull overhead spooked it. Posting photos to my blog

Steve Schellenger, just called to report that the Red Phalarope was refound
after going missing for well over an hour.
It was last seen flying towards the right most pond/pool of the 3 near the

I received some Intel suggesting that the Jones Beach Red Phalarope could be
one that was being seen at Plum Island MA. That bird was also a female with a
missing foot.
A quick peruse of the MA list serve showed the bird was last reported on July
8th.

I pulled out the heavy artillery optics to bring you a picture with wow
factor. Who are we kidding? It's a self-satisfying thing.

Some notes. I arrived around 2:30 to hear that the Red Phalarope hadn't been
seen in a hour. I first stopped at the easternmost pon
Park at the Nature Center and walk west about 350 yards to the blind. In
addition to the RED PHALAROPE in the pool, there was a continual movement of
shorebirds landing on the flats and then going west. A GULL-BILLED TERN made a
brief appearance and the fly by COMMON TERNS repeatedly spooked th
as of 5:30 am the Red Phalarope continues and is actively foraging in the
previously reported area of Jones Beach SP in Nassau Co.

bird so I figured I would send a broadcast message.
When I left, about 30 minutes ago, the Red Phalarope was still showing
well. It sporadically takes flight in response to a number of variables
including low flying aircraft.

A RED PHALAROPE was very cooperative today near the Canadian shore of the
Niagara River in Niagara Falls, Ontario. It was very near the shore with
the sunken barge in the background. You sometimes had to walk right up to
the railing and look down to see the bird. From the same spot, one could

About 9 am I had a Red Phalarope land in the ship canal visible from my
apartment window at West 218th Street next to Inwood Hill Park in northern
Manhattan. The bird drifted westward towards Spuyten Duyvil and the Hudson
River. We tried to bird the Hudson from the west end of Dyckmann Street, but
Extensive search of the north Brooklyn shoreline failed to turn up the Red
Phalarope this morning.

A Red Phalarope was found by my team on the Brooklyn (Kings County) CBC.
Location is behind the Fairway market in Red Hook, at the end of Van Brundt
street. The bird was in the section of water bounded by the artist's
warehouses on the left and the water taxi pier on the right (across from th

An amazing assemblage of shorebirds were present on Skinner Lane in Orange
County this morning the most notable of which was the continuing RED PHALAROPE.
At least a dozen birders viewed the bird during the hour and half I was
present this morning. I had a total of sixteen species this morning
At about 4:15 this afternoon I found a basic plumage RED PHALAROPE at
the south end of Sagaponack Pond (Suffolk Co.). The bird was best
viewed from the pond entrance along Sagg Main Street just before the
beach. The bird was at 40°54'39.20"N, 72°17'8.46"W. The only avian
sign that spring
