maybe five. I've waited up to about one minute or two. I checked with 'ps ax | grep mplayer' to see if mplayer had started but it was never running. I tested mplayer on the CLI as mentioned in my first post, and it work

I found something that mitigates this problem. At least on the two linux systems I use, Gentoo and Ubuntu 7.04. I simply changed the Audio mixer in softsqueeze from my sound card to Java Sound Audio Engine. This made the problem almost entirely go away. -- Seron
