I've waited up to about one minute or two.
I checked with 'ps ax | grep mplayer' to see if mplayer had started but
it was never running.
I tested mplayer on the CLI as mentioned in my first post, and it
work

What else could I do to troubleshoot this?
Before I discovered PlayReal I tried to use the AlienBBC plugin without
success. I disabled it, but could some remnant of it be interfering?

I found something that mitigates this problem. At least on the two linux
systems I use, Gentoo and Ubuntu 7.04. I simply changed the Audio mixer
in softsqueeze from my sound card to Java Sound Audio Engine. This made
the problem almost entirely go away.

32codecs and mplayer, both with the
real USE flag, which I put in /etc/portage/package.use like this:
media-libs/win32codecs real
media-video/mplayer real
I've got sipr.so.6.0 in the following places:
$ slocate sipr.so
/usr/lib/real/sipr.so.6.0
/usr/lib/win3
; in the console
I'm running the server on a linux pc
$ uname -prs
Linux 2.6.12-gentoo-r10 Pentium MMX
Any ideas?
