So it's the v4l settings that are wrong or the SANE settings?
There's a couple of things I'd fix with the v4l backend
1) Default (startup) mode must be valid and supported so a user can

Hello!
When I call sane_start() it returns SANE_STATUS_INVAL (4). This happens both
when I use the API and the scanimage binary.
scanimage -L reveals:
device `v4l:/dev/video0' is a Noname Logitech QuickCam Pro 4000 virtual device
I don't have anything else to test with, but I pressume grabbing
The sane v4l support is probably broken, as that code is unmaintained.
you could enable debugging info for it, but then you would have to
start fixing the backend. better to get a supported scanner.

Hi,
I'm wondering whether this is really a backend problem, as I am
currently using the genesys backend and am experiencing the same
problems. However, it does not seem as if other users with the same
backends and scanners have problems doing so. Additionally, switching
between different backend v
and such is the danger of using a closed source sane driver, we have no
way of helping you debug the problem. ask brother, and ask them to open
source it while you are at it... :)

Exactly the same problem with my Canon Lide 60, but unfortunately no
solution so far.
I should say that scanning never really worked 'great', there were some
minor issues in the past that I could only scan a limited number of
pages (most times only one) until I got 'invalid argument' but however,

I have a Brother MFC 210C on Ubuntu Dapper which I installed

Everything was working great (both printing and scanning
using xsane) but somehow the scanning has stopped working.
I tried uninstalling things and reinstalling, but nothing
