Don't expect Hyperthreading to work without compiling a new kernel.
BTW, I would update all your other packages, and maybe even updating to
RedHat 9. In fact, I was not aware that there was that late of a kernel
RPM version for RedHat 8.
In addition, I don't think you can run Tomcat with a JRE.

I am using RedHat 8 with SMP kernel.
OS: RedHat 8
Kernel: kernel-smp-2.4.20-20.8.i686.rpm
Tomcat: tomcat4-4.1.18-full.1jpp.noarch.rpm
Java: j2re-1_4_1_06-fcs-linux-i586.rpm
The Intel processor is hyperthreaded.
Tomcat fails to startup. Below is the stack trace.
