This would be my preferred solution, but I think upstream makes
this difficult because the pointer is by default at the center of
the icon, and its difficult to know how wide the icon is. Michael,
is it possible to make popups point be at the bottom of the icon
they are referring

I agree that it's not easy to see where the notification is pointing. I
see two direct solutions for this :
* Draw a black border around the notificatio
