Hi!
I think that shutdown, restart and hibernate should be avoided if the
package-manager is working anyways.
To achieve this i recommend that the gnome (or KDE/Xfce) dialog to initiate
those actions should check for apt's lock-file and warn the user before he can
proceed.

Yes there is definitely a bug somewhere but what it is seems to be
somewhat hard to track down since it appears to be due to a
configuration option in the users dotdir causing the problem. If it
stops working for you again then please let me know and I can get you to
send me a copy of your .openoff

5/27/2008: Running from menu provides same screen as previously.
Clicking on "Check" causes everything in the window to dim, and the
"spinning cursor" appears. While I thought it locked up at this point,
it apparently recovers by itself after n hour or two. However, in the

As the wireshark wiki states, it's not good to run Wireshark as root because
the packet analysers may be insecure. The proper way to do this is to use:
sudo dumpcap -w dumpfile

I'm using nis, if that helps at all. I can trash if I trash a file or
folder from my mounted remote home folder, but not any other disk,
whatever the filesystem (I have ext3, NTFS and FAT32.)

Its unlikely that Rhythmbox will show errors as by the looks of things
its blocking the sound device. However try running both apps from a
terminal to see output.
E.g $ rhythmbox > rhythmboxlog.txt

This bug appears to be fixed in openoffice.org 1:2.4.1~rc2-1ubuntu1 in
hardy-proposed. Please try the new version and let me know if it also
