The Jaunty Alpha4 live cd also results in the same problem for me. What I do is:
1. Insert the live cd
2. Turn on computer
3. Start Jaunty live
4. Go to 'Hardware drivers'
5. Enable b43
6. Make connection to a WAP

P.P.S. An invocation of sudo toshset -video both may be necessary in the
script... Hmmm... come to think of it, the need to sudo may be why the
script doesn't exist... Perhaps there is a way of achieving the same
effect by writing to the /proc filesystem (see e.g. the tosh brightness
scripts).

As you say it might not be linked to Xorg. But the problem was so
painfull for us and after weeks of unsuccesful trials to find out its
origin, we have decided to revert to Ubuntu 8.04 and this has completly
solved our issue. Our server is now running smoothly, what a pleasure !
