I have also had this issue. Copying with Dolphin makes the PC very slow, plasma
effects take a hit and dolphin seems very sluggish. After a while it will
unfreeze. Using cp to copy files has no impact on the performance of the PC.
Dolphin is quick and everything else seems ok.

launch updatedb.mlocate with an "idle" io priority. So the last lines of

On a clean install of Karmic (System76 factory), I tried holding down
the ALT key
The optimal solution of course would be an incremental database update - only
change stuff that actually *does* change, and don't rescan all filesystems of
which 99% are unchanged between updates. But what's missing there is a decent

Several things that I tried, without success:
- build a kernel which uses the bfs scheduler instead of the standard linux
scheduler
result: slightly less flickering - but still unacceptable. Overall performance
was worse.
- use of vanilla build of firefox 3.5.7 instead of the package provided b
