I think what this was was that install-package or qapt-batch didn't
support returning 1 when they exited with failure, so we had to assume
that things worked. Now qapt-batch does return 1 when it exits upon
failure, so this won't be too hard of a fix for oneiric.

I just installed 64-bit 10.04 onto an IBM ThinkPad W500, and I was
having the same network-manager related problem, which was resolved by
switching to wicd as suggested in comment #46.

Update: Got myself a working version of cairoDevice by doing the
following:
1) At the bash prompt:
sudo apt-get install build-essential libgtk2.0-dev
2) At the R prompt:
install.packages("cairoDevice")
It would be nice if someone fixed the Ubuntu package to resolve that

I reproduce it on unity/compiz desktop. If I move the pointer a litter
bit down it works. Also I noted that theme has no effect. Ambiance,
Clear Looks and Radiance have the same effect.

Stefan, please try the instructions on the page linked in my previous

patching CUPS so that the Avahi service file is not needed any more and
