Unfortunately, the error is gone for now: Both the existing Precise
installation and the new Quantal installation now boot perfectly without

Since I experience this problem on Cinnamon, Unity 3D, gnome classic
session (excluding the no effects version), and gnome 3, the problem
lies in something else in Ubuntu 12.04. Maybe its xorg, compiz, or
something that isn't working well with Nvidia drivers.
