When I press the backlight keys, I can see the OSD indicator changing, however
the backlight brightness does not change. It always stays at the lowest value.

I haven't tried "and stopped udevtrigger" and "sleep x" yet; that's
next.
Instead of 'sudo lightdm stop' and 'sudo lightdm start', I've had
consistently good luck (so far) with 'sudo service lightdm --full-

It eventually dawned on me that the odd symlinks are due to decorated
grep output. This was a result of me setting:
export GREP_OPTIONS="--color=always -nI"
in my environment. Still seems, the package should be amended to cleanup
user environment vars that may impact the install?

if you didn't know, all that was achieved on my copy of the bug (the
older one) is that you can workaround the problem by selecting "try
ubuntu without installing" from the cli menu then using the install link
on the desktop.

Now that the fix has been published to quantal-updates, I have removed
the version from my PPA. If you installed the version from my PPA,

a.) you dont have to change /etc/cloud/cloud.cfg's value of preserve_hostname.
cloud-config input setting that will do the same thing as you were attempting.
b.) you can set the hostname by cloud-config input with 'hostname'.

Does the v3.6-rc1 kernel[0] boot? If not, we can perform a bisect
between v3.5 final and v3.6-rc1. It would probably also be good to
confirm v3.5 final[1] does not have this bug as well, so we know we have
the correct starting/ending versions(To rule out this being fixed in a
3.5 stable release).
To follow this up, the .deb at least on Lucid does NOT have the write
permission set.
