Hello!! After reading all the comments, and many tests of my own, I can
conclude the following:
1) Kernel version / linux distro doesn't affect the issue.
2) It is a problem specific to suspending. If you don't suspend, you
don't loose power monitoring/lid close.
3) There are two temporary fixes

Wow. Thank you so much Raymond, this worked perfectly. I can't believe
that this did not turn up in any of my previous searches. It's so nice
to be able to use my speakers again without the crackling problem.

Christopher, I downloaded today's ISO from dev-branch, but it was
impossible to complete the command:
apport-collect -p xserver-xorg-video-nouveau 1181902
because I can't even start Ubuntu from graphic mode. When I click on
"Preview Ubuntu" (rather than Install) I switched shell (Ctrl + Alt +
F2)
