The solution:
Uncomment the code which has been commented out due to an already fixed gnome
bug. This fixed the issue for me. Please confirm that it does fix it for you,
too.

Turns out this happened because of some build exclusive flags in a dkms
conf:

That doesn't work. "restart" is an upstart specific command. You need to
use the init-neutral "service" or "systemctl".

Full /boot directory might be reason for this. I got next kernel update
3.13.0-54 today and it installed without problem but I purged old kernel
packages first.
$sudo apt-get purge linux-image-3.13.0-52-gen
