there are actually two bugs here: the first one being that 3D
acceleration doesn't work out of the box using Ubuntu's installation of
the Nvidia driver through "additional pilots": for that to work, you
need to add “Option “PrimaryGPU” “Yes”” to
/usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-nvidia.conf.
This is for the convenience of user who uses custom firmware and company
who deploy updated firmware. Without the /lib/firmware/updates
directory, if user want to use custom firmware, he has to replace the
/lib/firmware files or create a directory for each kernel version.

I replaced the Nvidia video card in my system and the problem seems to
have gone with it.
I had seen an improvement with the Nvidia card after switching from the
digital video output to the on-card VGA output, but over a period of a
couple of weeks or so, the video degraded again.

I know getting bugs fixed or even recognised as bugs can be very time
consuming and frustrating.
In the case of gnome-shell extensions we only have the choice between:
* Allow extensions, and allow them to do anything including breaking
the shell; or
* Disallow extensions.

I disabled it because with my laptop, asus x59gl, since lubuntu 12.04 I
was forced to disable acpi or it couldn't complete the boot, so this
time I did it again.

ubuntustudio-controls crashed with IndexErr
Oliver, the bug in ubuntustudio-controls is fixed. The problem with the
audio device itself is a different one. it looks like jackdbus is
frozen. killall -9 jackd jackdbus will kill it. Then maybe try running
jack with a buffersize of 4096 rather than 1024 as some mother board
audio systems require
