I found that this error could be consistently reproduced on bionic. The
problem occurs if /var/lib/mysql already exists before installing the
packages.
Steps to reproduce, from a bare install of Ubuntu server:
1) sudo mkdir /var/lib/mysql
2) sudo apt install mysql-server

I can confirm that this exact same behaviour happens for me.
I recently upgraded from Ubuntu 11.04 (in which I was using Gnome 2 and the
places menu was working fine.
I have attached .local/share/zeitgeist/activity.sqlite (the one from before the
upgrade).

When there are security updates available, update-notifier in Jaunty
(v0.76.7) doesn't show an icon in the notification area; instead, it
just runs update-manager*. This is annoying.
