6.04 worked, 7.10 was broken, 8.04 alpha half-worked, 8.04 beta totally
broken again.
I reported 8.04 alpha Live CD & system crash and showed how to repair
xorg.conf.
Result : 8.04 beta again runs in
After more tests, I must conclude that xorg for that display adapter was
broken again between alpha6 and beta.
Whichever xorg.conf I use from autodetected or adding my a6-working
patch to it, the display will fail the way I described (hang or
spontaneous reboot).

And that if I kill it, it will restart automatically.

I think I have seen & misplaced a message saying this bug is corrected.
There is a change in 8.04 beta regarding it indeed.
But the problem got worse, I'm afraid.
(1) Desktop Live CD still starts in line mode, not character fullscreen.

I can say that the situation is "sticky".
That is, once gedit alledges that the file was externally modified, it will
continue to do so if one selects "Don't save" and tries to save again (and
again).

I confirm Rebecca's report.
As I'm deep testing 8.04a4-6, I gedit files on an external fat32 USB drive and
it happens exactly as she says : occasionally, saving, or rather wanting to
save, a long time edit file (typically dormant behind a background tab) will
produce that message.

2) screen related rest taken from 7.04,

As this bug is supposed to be fixed and as I have similar but presumably
different problems with the same chipset, I have filed new bug #197514 instead
of be looking like commenting a fix.
I have attributed it to xorg.
Please requeue if you know better.

I've never seen the problem with 7.06.
With 7.10, I have seen it consistently in a dozen or so LiveCD boots.
