Public bug reported:
Happened while I was messing with dconf, etc settings, some of which are
encrypted via symbolic link to ecryptfs directories.
ProblemType: KernelOops
DistroRelease: Ubuntu 11.10
Package: linux-image-3.0.0-9-generic 3.0.0-9.14
ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 3.0.0-9.14-generic 3.
To clarify, the one-reboot persistent freeze image I mentioned was with
Compiz under xorg-edgers packages.
One other odd occurrence was terminal text partially overlayed on GNOME.

The latest Lucid kernel ("2.6.32-12.16", 64bit) seems to have fixed this
longstanding problem for me. Also, for this reason or another during the
update, the initial RAM usage appeared to go down a good ~64MB. Before,
this machine was mysteriously less usable than an otherwise older and
slower one
Didn't catch this in time for the last message... I just tried purging
all my linux-backports packages, plus some other old linux packages. My
description appears to be wrong in including the other packages in the
bug. However this time it managed to purge some of the latest linux-

Yes, exactly...sorry if that was a bit unclear. I removed, then
attempted to purge the package. The problem is still present through
version 2.6.28-10, the latest.
If I had to take a random guess, I would think the packages' removal
scripts are trying to remove that file on both remove and purge,
