Harvey Muller's solution worked for me as well. For the first time in
months I actually saw usplash on boot!
Seems weird because I tried these exact same steps not too long ago and
it didn't work. Perhaps in combination with driver updates? I did just
upgrade to the latest nvidia drivers (171.05)
It is specific to only this option. All the other options work fine.

I'm not sure what the problem originally was, but it now seems to be

Ok, this time around it didn't come back as corrupted... so I guess that
isn't a "hint to the problem".
In any event, I tar'd up all the new log files again just in case there
is something new in this run.

It seems the file is corrupt on my hard drive as well. Could this be a
hint to the problem?
I'll try to reproduce the problem again and see if the file is still
