Firstly, none of the workarounds listed above worked for me on my Sony
Vaio S460. Dapper could not power off or reboot, Edgy can reboot but not
power off.
However I've just tried Herd 1 Desktop CD and it did power off after a
LiveCD session.
Can anyone confirm this, preferably with an installatio
I installed wesnoth and it took me ages to figure out why clicking
"Campaign" had no effect -- because there were no campaigns installed. I
had installed Wesnoth with Add/Remove... (on Edgy) and there are no
campaign packages visible there. If I had used synaptic I would probably
have noticed them.

I have this same issue on one of my machines.
I get the same output as James - i.e. it appears in ps, I am in the
admin group, and I get the same output from apt-check.
What else can I check?
