And 'ls -l' is fast in that same directory?
I cannot see anything particular in VLC; it just lists the files in the
directory. There is no way to avoid that other than to disable subtitle
search. And that cannot be disabled by default, lest it piss a lot of
users off.

I'm not sure I understand what you mean, but it seems to me that the
desktop just fails to redraw after VLC shrinks. In that case, it's a bug
in the desktop process, not in VLC.

VLC keeps missing the deadline for pictures, and looks like PulseAudio
keeps getting empty buffers. This usually means that either the computer
is too slow or too busy, or the computer clock or clock driver is
