So this wasn't related to the linux-firmware package, I'm now running
1.197.2 with working sound.

Sound now longer works on hirsute after
No, this is the sound from the headphone jack, not the monitor. I agree
it's not immediately apparent how those commits could affect the sound.
When I go into the sound settings it shows my headphones as plugged in.
But even when I try to use the "test left" and "test right" buttons
nothing comes

After upgrading to 1.197.2 from 1.197 my sound stopped working. I spent
some time following the "sound troubleshooting procedure" but nothing
worked. Eventually I downgraded the package and now my sound is working
again.

This bug is fixed in the v3.7-rc2-quantal kernel and
3.6.3-030603-generic (which I am running right now). It was probably
caused by the kernel trying to report the battery health of my keyboard,
but in any event it has been fixed upstream.

Sure, I can test the upstream kernel.
Also, I was able to reproduce the bug using an entirely different
bluetooth adapter on a different computer (Macbook Pro 1,1), so the
problem isn't that specific to that adapter. Once again the battery
level stopped responding and then the computer crashed.
