I can confirm that this is a bug with that particular card/module. I
removed the card and switched to integrated audio (VIA Technologies,
Inc. VT8233/A/8235/8237 AC97 Audio Controller) and problems have
disappeared.
A possible workaround for the EMU10k1X was reported in the forums as

>From the comments in the forum it seems that most (all?) of the users
this is affecting are using the Sound Blaster Live! (EMU10k1X). Sounds
like a problem with that specific module.

I am experiencing a similar sounding problem on a Dell Inspiron 6400
with a Mobility Radeon X1400 GPU running Lucid 64bit with the 2.6.32-22

the top of the screen. When this happens the machine is *completely*

@Aaron: Just noticed that the FinalFreeze starts today. Will this fix be

@Sebastien: This is definitely nvidia-96 specific. Many people have

GDM freeze on display of password box

Did the partial distribution upgrade to Beta2 this morning, plus a
hundred or so updates later in the day (including some nvidia packages).
Unfortunately, this bug still exists. Can not log in normally! Seems
like a pretty important bug to me. Is anyone else worried by the seeming
lack of movement
Boot successful when adding "nouveau.noaccel=1" manually to boot line in
grub. The splash image flashes for a second, but screen is mostly black
before gdm loads. I can then log in and use desktop with no apparent
problems.

Same problem here with fully updated Lucid Beta1. I have been manually

I have some even more bizarre behavior to report with regards to this

into a Windows XP machine right before trying to mount it in Ubuntu. I
have been able to reproduce this multiple times.

I would like to second Bryan Hoyt's comments that this bug is very real

kernel problem, boot problem, etc.). I have been experiencing the
*exact* same symptoms:
