The default config file is designed for the js enabled version. If js
support is going to be removed, can the config file be rewritten to be
functional without it? As is, the package installs but does not run.

I worked around this issue by doing a chmod 644 on /usr/lib
/notification-daemon/notification-daemon
It's ugly but everything else works now, including Pidgin and Evolution.

Do a sudo chmod 444 /etc/init.d/hotkey-setup and then reboot. This
stops the daemon from starting in the first place, and while the script
isn't executable, it will allow you to upgrade the package. Change the
permissions on the file back to normal and then reboot again.

I can confirm this on Winbook A210 Sempron laptop with the ATI Xpress
200 chipset. Booting with the parameter acpi=off will let me boot but X
refuses to start or display the error message.
