Adam, as per http://us.msi.com/product/mb/Z77A-G43.html#/?div=BIOS an
update is available for your BIOS (2.10). If you update to this, does it
change anything?
If not, could you please both specify what happened, and provide the output of
the following terminal command:
sudo dmidecode -s bios-ver
Just a note, I have since upgraded to a fresh install of 12.10 with the
same issue.

Sorry for the delay, I tested with 3.6.1 kernel release in:
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.6.1-quantal/
I got the same result, with a segfault occuring here:

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer
to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest
v3.6 kernel[0] (Not a kernel in the daily directory) and install both
the linux-image and linux-image-extra .deb packages.
