The "just show the properties of item X" is actually not handled by
alacarte, it just calls out to gnome-desktop-item-edit, which is shipped
by gnome-panel.

In humble option ... it would be silly if upstream partly duplicates
functionality which is already there - gnome-panel should interface with
Alacarte, which could then also provide a "properties" menu item on
actual menus and sub-menus (compare with the "explore" feature in the
Windows start-menu)
