One more data point:
When docking the laptop while running, the problem doesn not occur, apparently
even after a subsequent suspend and resume cycle.

I've additionally tried to restart compiz after docking my notebook;
unfortunately, that didn't help at all. The only workaround is still to
kill the X server.
Is there anything I can do to help debugging the problem? Right now I
have to restart X at least once per day...

Video output judders after suspend

At least a few logs (apport-collect 1178218) would be useful. And no,
this is more likely to be a kernel issue.

I'll try to submit logs as soon as I am able to verify that it does not
occur with UXA (which is what I am using right now - that would possibly
render the logs useless).
Would it also be a kernel issue if it only occurs with SNA? I'm not that
familiar with the graphics architecture and just
This one is likely to be AdaptiveVSync that is implemented by SNA but
not UXA. It is used where the client is rendering too slow in an effort
to allow the refresh rate to catch up. The Xorg.0.log would clarify
more - for example UXA is unable to perform vsync'ed rendering on recent
hardware.

And the other thing to note is that if compiz uses a CopySubBuffer to
update a window, that is not specified to be vsynced.

Ok, I'm convinced - I have switched back to SNA, and am now waiting for
the problem to appear again. I'll try to submit logs as soon as it
manifests. And I didn't have to wait long - it happened in the web
browser while typing soon in the previous sentence, in the terminal
while watching fast
And it just happened on UXA - multiple times. Kernel issue it seems to
be...
I'd happily try the mainline 3.9 kernel and report, but due to a bad
decision while partitioning I only have room for one kernel on my boot
partition, and that is not likely to change any time soon.
Do you know if there
My comments before where for your vsync bug (#1178220) not this one;
apologies for the confusion. The resume issue here is likely to be
something like bad PAT settings.

So is that something that has to be fixed in the Kernel, or in the X
driver? Anything I can do to help debugging it, except, as mentioned,
trying a different kernel?
One additional observation:
When the system is in the laggy state, dragging windows is mostly fluid
(except for the occasional
