All personal hidden folders were removed. However, the problem persisted. I did not, however, remove hidden individual files. Ubuntu was removed and re-installed. I was 99.9997% sure this procedure would result in failure. I was correct. I have since created a new user account and all works

For me, this problem started not with the upgrade to Gutsy, but sometime within the last two weeks. For me, however, it's not that the appearance dialog doesn't work, it's display just doesn't update to reflect what you are doing to it. For now, my workaround is to run:
