i found that it needed pdftoppm
i reinstalled this (in package xpdf-utils) with synaptic (and had to remove
poppler-utils, which seemed to have caused the conflict?)
but i get now the error message
Unable to start PDF loader pdftoppm.
what is still wrong?

This seems to me a duplicate of bug #137944. Can you try if the provided
package of xournal 0.4.1 solves all the issues you reported? If you need
x86_64 I can upload to my PPA.
