Sorry for the delay in getting back about this.
It was in fact a memory error. There as a bad address, and I believe that
had been the root of many problems with the machine randomly crashing even
before I reinstalled.
Since I pulled the bad ram and reinstalled again, there have been no

Please boot the installer and choose the chec disc option to verify that
the installation medium is not corrupt, and then the memory test option
and let it run for at least 15 minutes and let us know if it finds any
errors.
