Correction: It is deja-dup not duplicity that exposes above described
behaviour
It seems that there is an issue with python2 crypto handling.

Here are some more observations:
After the password dialog appeared, duplicity says:
Preparing ...
Scanning ...
asks for the password again.
One can break this loop only by cancelling the backup.
