It seems that Ubuntu wasn't the problem after all. I found out that both
my service provider and my router has been cutting off my Internet
connection. This made the problem hard to diagnose. Marking the report

If you don't use UPnP you need to have a gateway. I'm not saying you
need to set it statically but you need to get one from your DHCP-server.
See example attached with a valid setup.

Thomas, I'm sorry that I didn't express myself clearly. I don't know if
I use UPnP for my internet connection or not. I only remotely know what
UPnP means. My Internet connection might be a heavy user of UPnP, and I
wouldn't know. If it's important to know this, could you tell me how to
find out?
Hello
It seems you have done manual configuration. Enable roaming mode so that
NetworkManager configures your interface. When you have done that, you
can get network information by right-clicking the network-manager applet
which appears besides the clock.

No no no, I'm using DHCP, which means automatic configuration - the
exact opposite to manual configuration. Don't let those greyed out ip-

ADSL device, I had to temporarily set a fixed ip address to be able to
control the ADSL

Find out what your default gateway is (connection information on NM

Internet connection to go down. Observe first if connection information

Hello Thomas,
The text field for default gateway (gateway address) is empty in
Network Manager. I'm using DHCP. Is there another way to do what you
suggested?

In this mode, does the Internet connection work? Seems strange
(impossible) that it does without a default gateway.
I'm not familiar with UPnP but maybe that's what you're using?

I don't know what role UPnP might have in this, but my Internet
connection is definitely working (when not cutting off), and the
connection method is DHCP. I think when an ADSL connection is made with
DHCP, one is always supposed to leave the default gateway blank, I
remember doing so for years -
