I have got the same problem on my Lenovo X200 laptop. I have a fresh
instalation of ubuntu 9.10 and the system freezes when I start to
download several torrents. With the oldest 8.10 ubuntu everything works
fine.

When i download torrents, my system blocks after a while (everytime when i'm
not arround), i can shutdown but i get blank screen to black screen when
shutting down (halfway the shutdown) further my router blocks out and it takes
2 resets to get it up and running again.

Installed a newer version of iproute and I can use my normal firewall
script with packet shaping again. Problem happens less frequent now, but
still didn't go away, unfortunately. Maybe I should move away from
Ubuntu.

Switching the cables and using the onboard ethernet for the local
network and the PCI NIC card for the external connection did not resolve
