Confirming. I'm having this problem as well. I haven't had any crashes
with it, but fast switching can and does cause repeating login prompt
noises as you described. If I recall correctly, restarting the X server
fixes the problem. (Ctrl-alt-backspace or sudo /etc/init.d/gdm restart)
