The code in question no longer uses cp and now should always pass along
the installation target, which it was not doing here. Please reopen
this report if you are still experiencing the latter problem.

fails on 1GB
It doesn't work on my 1GB USB stick either, though i don't see the
traceback, just:

It seems clear that cp is being called with the wrong arguments:
['cp', '-ra', '/tmp/tmpcdzqro/.', '']
confirmed via strace:
18304 execve(/bin/cp, [cp, -ra, /tmp/tmprBtMBm/., ], [/* 17
vars */]) = 0
self.device['mountpoint'] is seen to be '' in the debug output as well.
It looks like that
